With so many tradespeople out there, why in the world do you need to hire a licensed contractor? In today’s economy, I would say it is more important than ever to protect yourself and your property. Hiring a licensed professional offers reassurance and peace of mind. In NC, any home construction, remodeling, or repair exceeding $40,000 – including both labor and materials -requires a permit and licensed contractor.
There are many businesses out there without a qualifying person or a general contractor’s license that present themselves as such.

7 reasons Why Should You Hire a Licensed General Contractor for Your Home Renovation, Addition or Remodeling Project
If you are beginning any sort of home renovation, It is important to understand when a licensed contractor is a smart move for your project.
#1: Stay on the Right Side of the Law!
Licensed NC General Contractors must pass a rigorous exam in order to obtain a license. This test covers many different aspects of home construction from foundations to framing to finishing work. Licensed contractors possess in-depth knowledge of building codes. This knowledge ensures your project meets certain requirements, minimizing legal risks and streamlining the renovation process.
Contractors must be and remain knowledgeable about building codes and requirements. In addition, licensed contractors must renew their license yearly showing both proof of sound financials and continuing education credits.
Many “contractors” and construction companies advertise home building and renovations… and they do not have a license or qualifier. It is baffling that so many of us just look at the name, a few reviews and dive right in without doing our homework.
If you are in North Carolina, looking up a company or person to ensure they have the credentials is super easy. All you have to know is the name of the legal company and/or the person and search the NC General Contractor website.
Personally, I have spent some time over the last few months just looking up various folks advertising on social media. I AM SHOCKED! Do your homework before you spend your money. It is only takes a minute or two of your time. While a company might be registered to do business in a certain jurisdiction, they do not have the licensing credentials.
When a contractor or construction company says licensed and insured, make them clarify EXACTLY what they have for your protection.
Some “contractors” play games to get around the $40K threshold in NC if they don’t hold a valid license. Sometimes it is sending customers two invoices, one for labor and the other materials. Sometimes it is not pulling a permit, though one is required.
#2: we bring the permits
Yes, building permits are a process. Yes, it can be frustrating, annoying, and time-consuming.
However, at the end of the day, whatever you do will add to the resale value of your home. Your taxes might increase, but your home value and ability to sell or refinance are not impeded.
When you decide to sell, every penny you have spent for permitted work will help you avoid or reduce potential taxes, but it will also increase the value of your home. On the flip side, if you buy a home with unpermitted work, you will be left holding the bag.
Get the permit. Do it right.
Find someone you trust that has the ability to do the job not only correctly, but on the “right side of the law” as well.
#3: Craftsmanship Fit for a King (or Queen!)
General contractors usually have a wide range of sub contractors with whom they work closely. They have an obligation to ensure work is permitted, when required, and to utilize other licensed professionals for certain types of work.
After more than 25 years in the area, we at Island Contractors have many strong, long-standing relationships with subcontractors in pretty much any area of construction. Our clients truly have piece of mind when they choose our company for their home renovation, remodeling project, or addition. Our success on the Outer Banks and in surrounding counties such as Currituck or Camden has been built upon superior customer service and delivering a quality final project as contracted.
#4: Insurance? We Got You Covered!
Again, how many times have you seen licensed and insured. What does this even mean?
Anyone doing any work for you should be able to quickly provide certificates of insurance (COIs) upon your request. At a minimum, you should request copies of general liability and worker’s compensation.
If they cannot and will not provide, do NOT do business with these folks. The reality is accidents happen as do unforeseen mishaps. If the people you hire are not insured properly, you will be responsible as the homeowner.
#5: Peace of Mind
Many licensed contractors offer some sort of warranty be it from the manufacturer or workmanship. Typically, most licensed contractors will address any post-project concerns or questions promptly, securing your investment for the long haul.
Again, longevity is definitely worth considering. With the current building and remodeling “boom” since 2020, there are many what I call “fly-by-night” contractors.
They are here, they make their money, and they leave when there is any sign of a downturn. Any warranty or means of addressing concerns or issues is gone.
During times of downturn, it is more important than ever that you as the consumer and homeowner do your homework. The owner of Island Contractors has been in the area since 1998, when he founded his first company Southern Scapes.
His love of all things construction dates back to his childhood. He loves designing and creating beautiful interior and exterior spaces based on your unique objectives and property.
#6: Professionalism
At the end of the day, professionalism is what separates Island Contractors from others in this industry. We pride ourselves on updating and delivering not only a superior final product, but also on our customer service.
Home repairs, renovations, and additions should not be filled with stress! Countless times we have heard clients complain about the lack of communication from their contractors or builders.
It is common here in Currituck and Dare County to not get a call or text back. If you are inquiring about new work, this should be a red flag! Over the years, we have had many homeowners report that if they have an issue or problem, there is little or no communication from their “contractor”.
There is little recourse if you hire an unlicensed contractor. Our goal is to keep you in the loop as much as possible, and to be there if you have any question or concern.
#7: Expertise Galore
Licensed contractors boast a diverse skill set, proficient in handling various facets of your project with precision and expertise, guaranteeing a comprehensive and successful outcome. In other words, your expectation of a contractor should be that they know a lot about many facets of construction.
Hiring someone with little knowledge outside of their own “wheel house” can be detrimental, especially if they run into issues or problems outside of their area of “expertise”.
