Driveways: Repair or Replace?

Without a doubt, the first thing to consider when trying to determine whether to repair or replace your driveway is its age. The average lifespan of a driveway is around 15-20 years.

If your driveway is only a few years old, then repairing or jacking uneven surfaces might be the right choice. However, if your driveway is older, then you are likely only throwing good money after bad.

Repair or replace cracked driveway in Northeastern North Carolina

Outer Banks driveways

Many concrete driveways here on the Outer Banks are at, near, or past their prime. Over time, water, salt, vegetation, traffic, and improper maintenance damage your concrete and home’s exterior.

This damage often results in cracks, potholes, and/or uneven areas. While it might be possible to resurface or even re-level your concrete, you are likely better off removing and revitalizing your driveway if your driveway is older.

We at Island Contractors have installed hundreds of concrete projects over the last 25 years serving the area. Let’s examine some of the benefits of replacing your old driveway with a new one.

Value and Safety

Concrete driveways and walkways offer a significant return on investment. Let’s face it, the first thing a renter, guest, or potential buyer sees is the exterior of your property.

A beautifully designed new driveway also creates a first impression that your property has been well cared for. Not only does a new concrete driveway enhance your property’s curb appeal, but it also increases safety and durability.

Business & Rental Property Considerations

Many Outer Banks homes are rental properties. In addition, many year-round residents run home-based businesses or rent out part of their properties. Uneven walkways or driveways are a trip hazard, which can be costly if someone falls. In addition, more and more property owners are getting letters of nonrenewal for aging roofs, undisclosed structures, and failing driveways.

Insurers are in the business of limiting their risk, and your exterior is easy to see using aerial footage or on-site inspections.

Increasing Curb Appeal

During the “boom” of the early 2000s, houses were going up like crazy. When it came to planning your home’s driveway, the main consideration was likely the number of parking spots required by the permitting office.

Just drive around a bit, and it is clear that aesthetic considerations were likely not considered in planning and installing your existing driveway. At Island Contractors, we utilize both 2D and 3D design to give you a realistic view of how some minor changes in the design will increase your curb appeal while remaining functional.

The cool thing about concrete is that it is versatile. There are many design options to compliment your home’s style. Be it adding some color, a stamped border, or even just some curving lines will make a statement.

Curing Your Driveway the Right Way

Understanding the curing process is essential when it comes to new driveways, walkways, or pool decks. After pouring, it’s essential to keep the concrete moist for at least a week.

The longer the curing process, the greater the hardness and strength. There are various methods used to slow this process. The concrete mix itself is always a consideration.

Water Your Concrete

We also encourage “watering your concrete” to keep it moist. This can be done by simply spraying the concrete to keep it moist.

Some use wet burlap or plastic sheeting for the first several days. Likewise, limiting the driveway to foot traffic only for 7-10 days also increases its strength and durability.

Proper curing reduces the likelihood of cracks and extends the life of your driveway. Regular maintenance including removing debris, and stains, and sealing your driveway periodically can also extend the look and life of your concrete.

Our Two-Cents…

Investing in concrete driveways and walkways is a smart move for any homeowner looking to enhance property value and improve safety. As an experienced designer and contractor, a new, well-planned driveway makes an incredible first impression on guests, visitors, and potential buyers.

Beyond the aesthetics, it also ensures a safe environment. The key to a successful concrete project be it a driveway, walkway, or swimming pool deck lies in careful planning, proper installation, and regular maintenance.

By following these guidelines, you’ll enjoy the benefits of a beautiful and durable concrete surface for many years.
